They met through their work at the Ressourcerie des Frontières. During a sabbatical year, the couple, living in Fitch Bay, went for a coffee at a business that was for sale. The sign had just been put up, and Karine, who enjoyed going to cafés during her student years, thought it was a shame that the business in the heart of Stanstead was closing down. The couple saw a great opportunity to open a business in the heart of Stanstead that would bring together the small town’s community. Having already been involved in the hospitality field, as they were renting out their house in Fitch Bay, Karine and Jean embarked on a new project, and in 2018, L’Auberge Le Sunshine was born.
Both concerned about the importance of a place that can bring the Stanstead community together, Karine and Jean embarked on this wonderful adventure. Since Stanstead is a small town, they wanted to create connections between the various businesses and be close to their community. The importance of accepting differences and offering a warm welcome has made the inn a place where everyone can feel at home, which was the goal of Karine and Jean.
Karine Cantin
Karine is originally from Thetford Mines and worked in the environmental field for several years. She holds a bachelor’s degree in biology and a master’s degree in environmental studies. Before becoming a co-owner of the Inn, she worked for various regional municipalities and at the Ressourcerie des Frontières, primarily in waste management. Although she has no experience in the restaurant industry, Karine enjoys good wine and fine dining.
Jean Desrosiers
Jean is originally from Matane in Gaspésie. He holds a diploma in instrumentation and control but did not work in that field. Enjoying challenges, he worked at the Canadian Tire in his hometown, eventually securing a position as assistant manager. Later, at the age of 21, he became the manager of the Fleurimont branch in Sherbrooke. He stayed there for 8 years before leaving for new challenges. Jean had his own business before moving into mentorship. He now helps new entrepreneurs and those facing difficulties in their ventures. In his personal life, Jean is also very active. He has volunteered for Hockey Sherbrooke and is involved in municipal politics.
